βbut lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.β (Matthew 6:20, ESV) What are the βtreasuresβ that Jesus is speaking of here in verse 20 of Ch. 6 of Matthewβs Gospel which is a part of the βSermon On The Mountβ? Is it gold, silver, rubles, pounds, dollars, nice carsβ¦.? Maybe, if that is what one is treasuring. Our treasures are anything that draws attention and has the potential of drawing our hearts away from Jesus Christ. We must be careful to not place too much value on anything which is temporary. So, what is temporary? Anything that does not survive to eternity is a temporary treasure and one to which we must not hold tightly. Hold all things of this world loosely β we donβt really own anything; we just hold it as stewards for the ones who come after us and ultimately for God.
The Word of God and souls of men are treasures that never go away β letβs make a perfectly executed βlay upβ of those things by putting our highest possible value on such as these β the only ones on earth to survive into eternity. Amen
