““You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27–28, ESV) Jesus didn’t change the command “do not commit adultery”, but he put the command on steroids: don’t even think about it! God is looking at our hearts. If we are not doing something with our body but in our hearts we are thinking of that very thing – BUSTED – GUILTY! What we do in our hearts reflects where our treasure is. When we treasure in our hearts the very things God says not to do – then we have done them and we are guilty. When we ‘give’ ourselves to the Lord, we don’t just give the outside but all of me / you / us are given to the Lord. Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, soul, mind…. Matthew 22:37 To do it in our heart, which we are commanded to have and keep filled with love for God, we are violating multiple commandments. It’s still ‘illegal’ to do but now Jesus says DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!
