“For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling, and you said, “No! We will flee upon horses”; therefore you shall flee away; and, “We will ride upon swift steeds”; therefore your pursuers shall be swift.” (Isaiah 30:15–16, ESV)
We are each made on purpose for a purpose. Our purpose is to be rightly related to God by his gift to us of his Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus came and gave himself freely on the cross that we, by trusting in him and his finished work, may be reconciled to and made right with God.
We want to do something ‘fun’, ‘exciting’, ‘exhilarating’ . . . and so we are restless to ‘get away’ to the good things of life where our deepest needs are fulfilled in ‘fun’.
Our souls know what our bodies do not. We are not primarily physical; we are spiritual beings who reside for a time in physical bodies. All that ‘feels good’ is not. What we truly need is the: “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But instead we flee from God on our ‘fast horses’ not realizing that “We will ride upon swift steeds”; therefore your pursuers shall be swift.”.
We can never outrun our own needs that are only satisfied when we turn to find rest in quiet trust in Jesus Christ. The only way for us. That is the truth. Therein lies life.
