““Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4, ESV) The ‘happiness’ of mourning? Yes, exactly. When we see ourselves as we truly are (sinners who have been saved by the grace of God in Christ Jesus) and recognize that even though we have been born again – we still have a daily struggle with sin. We come before the Lord our God confessing our sin, asking for his cleansing (1 John 1:7-9), and knowing that he alone can provide what we need. That is, we recognize that we are continually dependent on the mercies of God for our cleansing. The mourning is over our sin – the blessing is over his payment for our sin and his ongoing mercy granting us daily forgiveness and cleansing which is truly a blessing – a blessing to be happy for. Our mourning is met with the comfort that only the Lord our God can provide. Thank you, Lord, for blessing me today and may I today and forever realize my deep need for you and my total dependence on you now and forever in Christ Jesus. Amen.
